With a name now synonymous for being wealthy, Bill Gates is an inventor, business magnate, philanthropist, computer programmer, and the former chief executive and chairman of Microsoft, which he cofounded with Paul Allen. From 1995-2007, he was ranked as the wealthiest man in the world, then again in 2009 and 2013-2014. He remains the largest individual shareholder of Microsoft with 6.4%, though he stepped down as CEO in 2000 and as chairman in 2014. Though many of his business practices have notoriously been called into question by the courts, Gates has turned much of his recent time to philanthropic works, including establishing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000. On January 1, 1994, Gates married Melinda French, with whom he has three children: Jennifer, Phoebe, and Rory.
